The fry: Moist haddock is the fish in crisp beer batter here ($8.99) - two immense pieces of it, nearly a pound in all. Diners also can get haddock fried in Italian bread crumbs ($8.99), and also topped with red sauce and mozzarella ($9.99), or cod that's baked ($11.99). Potato choices include good, from-scratch pancakes with delicate onion flavor. Dinner comes with creamy slaw and light rye bread with a salted crust, a once-common touch that's getting harder to find. Consider ordering the New England clam chowder ($2.25 cup, $2.75 bowl) - it's garlicky, creamy and rich, with plump clams and plenty of potato, though the potato could have been a tad more tender when I tried it.
The place: The 24-table, dimly lighted dining room is casual and pleasant, and the restaurant draws plenty of families. Before the sun sets, the windows at the back of the restaurant offer a view of Lake Denoon.
